In 2010, the Children's Choir took over the legacy of the historic Children's Choir of the Teatro alla Scala, founded in 1984 and entrusted over the years to the direction of Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, Nicola Conci and, from 1994 to the present day, Bruno Casoni.
Since its foundation, the Children's Choir regularly participates in opera and ballet productions and concerts of the Teatro alla Scala and is a guest in the seasons of important musical institutions such as the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, the Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
In 1998, the Children's Choir collaborated on the recording of Puccini's La bohème with the La Scala ensemble, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly. Numerous compositions were written especially for the Children's Choir of the La Scala Academy by authoritative composers such as Azio Corghi, Sonia Bo, Bruno Zanolini, Alessandro Solbiati and Carlo Pedini.
His artistic engagements at La Scala were very intense. The most recent opera and ballet titles, many of them season openings, include Carmen (2015), Tosca (2015 and 2019), Cavalleria rusticana (2015), Turandot (2015 and 2024), CO2 (2015), Der Rosenkavalier (2016), La bohème (2017 and 2023), Hänsel und Gretel (2017), Aittila (2018), The Nutcracker (2018 and 2022), Die tote Stadt (2019), La dama di picche (2022), La Gioconda (2022), Boris Godunov (2022), Werther (2024).
Concert activity at La Scala includes the Christmas concert conducted by Daniel Harding in 2013, the concert with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons in 2015, Mahler's Third Symphony conducted by Iván Fischer with the Budapest Festival Orchestra (2016), by Riccardo Chailly with the La Scala Philharmonic (2017) and by Daniele Gatti with the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra (2022), and Mahler's Symphony no. 8 conducted by Riccardo Chailly (2023). To these are added the appointments included in the project "Grandi Spettacoli per piccoli" from Britten's Il piccolo spazzacamino (2016 and 2024) to Il piccolo principe opera commissioned by the Teatro alla Scala to Pierangelo Valtinoni on a libretto by Paolo Madron (2023) to the concerts conducted annually by Bruno Casoni, with Marco De Gaspari at the piano, and those of the cycle "Lalla e Skali" entrusted to the direction of Mario Acampa.
The Choir's participation in "La Scala in the City", an initiative inaugurated by the City of Milan in 2021 to bring music and dance to various places in the city, involving the entire Milanese urban space, deserves a special mention.
His activities in other prestigious theatres and festivals of international importance are also significant. They include, among others, in 2014 the tribute to Fausto Romitelli under the direction of Fabián Panisello as part of the 23rd Milano Musica Festival; in 2016, for the Ravenna Festival, the concert "Le vie dell'amicizia: Ravenna-Tokyo", under the baton of Riccardo Muti; in 2017 Die Zauberflöte for the OperaLombardia Opera Season in Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona and Pavia, and, in 2018, in the Basilica di San Michele Maggiore in Pavia, for the first edition of the Festival di Musica Sacra, the concert with the Giardino Armonico conducted by Giovanni Antonini.
In 2019, the Children's Choir took part in the opening ceremony of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci at Chambord Castle, performing in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella and the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.
In 2021, the Choir performed several concerts. Among others, the closing concert of the Project "La Scala fa Scuola. Un Coro in Città" (A Choir in the City), an initiative that, thanks to the creation of fourteen choirs in Milan's primary schools, saw the La Scala Choir perform at Milan's Castello Sforzesco alongside the children of the city's choirs. The choir then had a very special experience performing at ‘high altitude’ in Pejo 3000 for the highlight event of the ecologically-minded art project "One of a Million", born from an idea of the OP Collective and realised in collaboration with the Azienda per il Turismo della Val di Sole.
An equally original experience was not lacking, such as the concert realised to coincide with the start of restoration work on the Torre Velasca, with the Academy Orchestra conducted by Speranza Scappucci, as well as the participation of one of the students as soloist in the Mediterranean Requiem, a work by Sebastiano Cognolato dedicated to the theme of migrants, premiered at the Teatro dell'Arte in Milan.
The Children's Choir regularly takes part in La Scala productions. Recent titles include Carmen (2015), Tosca (2015 e 2019), Cavalleria rusticana (2015), Turandot (2015 e 2024), CO2(2015), Der Rosenkavalier (2016), La bohème (2017 e 2023), Hänsel und Gretel (2017), Attila (2018), The Nutcracker (2018 e 2022), Die tote Stadt (2019), Pikovaja Dama (2022), La Gioconda (2022), Boris Godunov (2022), Werther (2024).
